Né en Italie en 1901, issu d’une famille de la grande bourgeoisie, (son père était un magnat de la presse et sénateur) Pier Giorgio a très vite montré une grande bienveillance pour les plus pauvres et un grand amour pour l’Évangile.
Sa foi étonne et dérange sa famille . Son père Alfredo définit son fils comme “un homme inutile”, condamnant son “vagabondage” à travers la ville parmi les gens qui ne sont pas à sa hauteur.
Pier Giorgio, pour sa part, est toujours souriant, acceptant les reproches sans répondre avec un véritable amour et une vraie participation à la souffrance humaine.
C’est un jeune homme joyeux qui est de plus un véritable athlète pratiquant toutes sortes de sports, mais c’est surtout la montagne qui l’attire, véritable image de sa vie spirituelle.
Sa devise : Verso l’alto (vers le haut.)
Il fédère ses amis autour de la « compagnie des types louches », avec qui il part gravir les hauts sommets italiens unis par une véritable amitié fondée sur la foi et la prière.. Et surtout il passe une grande partie de son temps dans les quartiers défavorisés de Turin se dévouant corps et âme pour les pauvres et les malades.
Dans une lettre il écrit :
«Malheureux celui qui n’a pas la foi!
vivre sans la foi, sans ce patrimoine à défendre,
sans cette vérité à soutenir
par une lutte de tous les instants,
ce n’est plus vivre mais gâcher sa vie »
Il décède très jeune, à 24 ans, en 1925 des suites d’une poliomyélite. Lors de son enterrement, une grande foule composée principalement de personnes en précarité se déplace pour rendre un dernier hommage au jeune homme au grand étonnement de sa famille.
Lors de l’ouverture de son procès en béatification en 1981, son corps avait été exhumé: intact, et avait été transféré dans la cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Turin.
Quelques années plus tard, en 1990, il était béatifié.
Le pape Jean-Paul II a alors insisté sur « l’homme des huit Béatitudes ».

Murió muy joven, a la edad de 24 años, en 1925 de poliomielitis. En su funeral, una numerosa muchedumbre compuesta principalmente por personas en situación precaria acudió a presentar sus últimos respetos al joven, con gran asombro de su familia.
Al inicio de su proceso de beatificación en 1981, su cuerpo fue exhumado: intacto, y fue trasladado a la Catedral de San Juan Bautista en Turín.
Unos años más tarde, en 1990, fue beatificado.
El Papa Juan Pablo II insistió entonces en « el hombre de las ocho Bienaventuranzas ».
